I agree with you on Dog Apartment and 27. Also happy that the Iranian film Our Uniform was nominated. It would have been fun to see Drijf by Levi Stoops and A Crab in the Pool by Alexandra Myotte and Jean-Sébastien Hamel also nominated.
Good question. Not sure I could settle on five, but among the shortlist of 15, it would have been fun to see one of the absurdist Estonian films – Eeva and Dog Apartment – get nominated. I also have love for 27, the other Miyu Productions film that was shortlisted, though I guess it's had a good run already, what with the Cannes and Annecy prizes. Would be curious to hear your picks Nag!
You've raised some really good points, all of which I agree with except for the 'forced merriment' of the attendees. I went to the Oscars one year and had a pretty good time, as have all of my NFB animations pals who have gone over the years. :)
Oh I'm sure – I also had a lot of fun when I went in 2017 (though I wasted a fair bit of time trying to find and chat to Dev Patel. Didn't succeed).
I was thinking more of the Hollywood folk in the front rows who have to paste on their gleaming grins when the host ribs them or they find out they haven't won. Though maybe they're actually having a great time too – I've never asked
Thankyou.
Very nice and fair article. Nice one Alex

Hi Alex. If you could choose 5 films to be nominated what would they be?
